Pony horses, simply known as ponies, are small horses that belong to the species Equus caballus. Despite their smaller stature, they are structurally distinct from full-sized horses and have a unique set of physical traits, temperaments, and histories. Key Characteristics of Ponies Ponies are not just "baby horses" (which are called foals); they are fully mature animals with distinct traits: • Height: The traditional definition of a pony is a horse that stands under 14.2 hands high (58 inches or 147 cm) at the withers (the ridge between the shoulder blades). • Build: Compared to horses, ponies generally have thicker coats, manes, and tails. They also possess shorter legs, wider barrels (barrels refer to the ribcage area), and thicker necks. • Hardiness: Ponies evolved in harsh, mountainous, or moorland environments. As a result, they are incredibly resilient, have strong hooves, and can survive on less food than a standard horse (often referred to as being "easy keepers"). • Temperament: They are known for being highly intelligent, friendly, and quick to learn, though their intelligence can sometimes translate into a stubborn or clever streak.
